We are firm believers that pricey grills are not the only ones that can cook great barbecue. You can purchase grills that can also deliver and perform at an affordable price. We will give you further in-depth analysis for each option and explain why we crowned them our top picks. So let’s talk grills!
Under $500 Choice – Dyna-Glo DGE530BSP-D 5-Burner
The Dyna-Glo 5-Burner is a powerful propane-fuel grilling beast. It has plenty of cooking space, totalling 708 square inches, with an impressive 5 primary stainless steel burner tubes, each generating up to about 10,000 BTUs, equivalent to about 50,000 BTUs in total, as well as a stainless steel side burner that generates up to 12,000 BTUs. There’s no doubt that this grill heats up to a very high temperature and stays hot with plenty of cooking surface.
The Dyna-Glo 5-Burner is also amazingly well-built and has dependable, sturdy construction. The cooking grates and burners are made out of stainless steel, as well as much of the main body. Although not all of its parts are made out of stainless steel, the other materials are not flimsy and it’s combined with burnished bronze-metallic finish, giving you the great performance and durability you should expect from a high-quality gas grill. Even with its sturdy steel and metallic construction, the Dyna-Glo is still relatively lightweight, weighing around 108 pounds when fully assembled. This grill also includes a warming rack and stainless steel heat tents, which are a griller’s best friend, flavoring your meat by sealing in flavor from vaporized fallen juices, enhancing that great BBQ taste.
It also has some great additional features which makes it extra convenient to use: an easy push button start electronic pulse ignition system to ensure quick and reliable ignition, LP tank slide-out holder makes it easy to access the propane tank and slide-out grease tray for easy cleaning of the grill. We love that you don’t have to tear this grill apart just to clean it. This is a crucial feature because clean, well-maintained grills last longer. And given with its low price, you can’t go wrong with this grill. It also offers 1 year overall warranty and 5 years for the stainless steel burners.
The only drawback in the Dyna-Glo’s design is its lack of natural gas capability. We are also disappointed that there’s an opening at the back of the grill where the lid meets the base, letting some heat escape and making it a little hard to get the temperature gauge to go over 500 to 650 degrees. As a fix, we have found that if you are feeling adventurous, you can resolve this flaw by cutting a 2” metal strip of aluminium kickplate and installing it on the lid. This small flaw aside, even without a homemade modification, the grill itself is great for cooking and even searing and has been a favorite among consumers for providing a great grilling experience. And one of the best features? You can purchase the Dyna-Glo 5-Burner for just $379 on Amazon, although its original list price may go up as high as $499. This is one of the best gas grills you can buy without breaking the bank, and still get all your favorite must-have features and functions to take you to grill nirvana.
If you want a dependable long lasting grill, this one is the way to go. It is well reviewed on Amazon. You should buy it there and here is why:
- All the reviews are like having hundreds of really good friends give you their personal experience with the grill, then taking all of that personal experience and giving it a star rating. You’re buying quality when there are 100’s of fans of the grill.
- A friendly UPS driver will deliver it right to your door. No waiting in line, no hauling it in your car. No sore muscles or achy back the next day.
- Amazon has the best price 99% of the time. Amazon constantly watches competitor pricing and makes sure you get the best deal. They do a ton of business and take advantage of economies of scale, which means you get the savings!
- FREE shipping. Enough said.
- Returns are easy. Amazon recently shipped a car, and they ship a ton of large items, all day, every day. If they can ship a car, rest assured, you will get your grill in perfect condition. BUT if for any reason it comes damaged, it is super easy to return. Just print out a UPS label, slap it on the box and a friendly UPS driver will pick it up, free of charge. This is way easier than waiting in a return line at Home Depot and talking with a bored, angsty teenage sales clerk.
No other grill compares for under $500. Be the man, get yourself this grill.
Under $1000 Choice – Weber Genesis S-330
Another offering from Weber that caught our attention is their Genesis series. All of those are worth checking but among the Genesis series of Weber, the Weber Genesis S-330 is one with the most expensive tag. But that’s to be expected since this unit packs all of the features you can find in other Genesis models. In addition, its body components are all mostly made up of stainless steel which is also partly why it is pricier even if it’s not of the highest grades. It can resist rust and have a solid construction of durable parts to last for several years. Since they want to make sure of good foundation and solid construction for the unit, it has lots of parts to put together so it might take a little while to set it up.
It has plenty of room to cook your foods all at the same time for its 507 square inches primary cooking area and 130 square inches for the warming rack. It has just a little lacking of heat capacity to size ratio of 38,000 BTUs for the main burners so it might take a little slower preheat times. Still it can heat up and reach high temperature. But it has 12,000 BTUs for side burner which is great for cooking your sauces, boiling water and even heating up your side dishes to complement your meals. It also features a sear station burner capable of heating up to 10,000 BTUs, a roller wheels for ease of moving it around and a push button electric ignition for faster and matchless lighting. Weber have also carefully designed the unit with a dual layer hood with double vaporization system for efficient heat retention. But be careful though, since it has better heat retention and it has better heat conductivity, it might become a little hot to touch on the lid if you’re cooking for too long. So it would be nice to have some mittens to open the lid and light the burners. The stainless steel rod cooking grates and Flavorizer ™ bars can leave beautiful sear marks on your meat and it does add more satisfying tastes to your gourmet meals.
It is no doubt that the Weber Genesis S-330 is one of the best performing gas grills that also falls in the middle of the our common price range for grills. But if you are still looking for similar features but more budget-friendly, you can go and check its lower counterpart which is the Weber Genesis E-330 which you can also find in the Best Weber Gas Grills for Genesis Series and Best Gas Grills Under 1000 Dollars. Although its listed price is above $1000 dollars, you can mostly get this for just around $950 USD. Not to mention, by just adding $20, you can opt to get yourself a natural gas grill. This really adds more value to the grill and makes it even more a great deal. It also got a 4.7 out of 5 star rating as of this writing.
Over $1000 Choice – Weber Summit E-470 Gas Grill
Weber has always been associated with the best of backyard barbeque and is one of the most well-known manufacturers of grills. They have a huge selection of drool-worthy models on the market, but among all of them, the Weber Summit E-470 captured our attention, due to its seriously loaded features. We love that it includes four main burners that can generate as high as 48,800 total BTUs, 10,600 BTUs for sear stations, 12,000 BTUs for side burners, 6,800 BTUs for the smoker burner and 10,600 BTUs for a rear-mounted infrared rotisserie burner. This gives you a total of 580 square inches of premium cooking space with stainless steel cooking grates and flavorizer bars. This grill will give you high, consistent and even heat for optimal grilling and searing every time.
The Weber has a sturdy and heavy construction, with materials made of porcelain enameled steel, cast aluminum and stainless steel. And even though it’s not entirely made from stainless steel, they dedicated stainless steel to the parts of the grill where it is really essential. The Weber Summit E-470 can also be lighted using its impressive Snap-Jet individual burner ignition system, making it easier to operate and control the temperature. Speaking of convenience, this grill also boasts an awesome grease management system, where the juices that drip off the meat are funneled down to the flavorizer bars and those that haven’t vaporized go down into an angled grease tray and drip pan. The tray and pan are located at a safe distance from the burner to avoid igniting a fire and ensuring safety of the griller. This tray is also relatively easy to clean, since it can easily slide out of the cabinet and when the catch pan starts to fill, you can simply remove the disposable drip pan and replace it with a new, empty pan. Fair warning, this drip pan can fill quickly and overflow, especially when the grill is left outside, uncovered in the rain. Make sure to store it properly when not in use to help it last longer. And since the Weber Summit E-470 is capable of being fueled by both liquid propane and natural gas, you have optimum versatility and the option to use natural gas for cost savings, something we think everyone can get get behind.
With all these great features, it’s not at all surprising that the Weber might lighten your wallet a bit. The original listing price is a hefty $2049 USD, but you can almost always find this grill rockstar at more competitive price, as low as $1,899 USD. And since Weber is a staple in the industry with a sterling reputation to uphold, you can easily contact their customer support and find available replacement parts for their grills. But be patient when contacting support, there are some users who have given bad reviews on their customer service. With that said, Weber offers a generous 5 year warranty for the Summit E-470. Looking for something similar but not sold on the E-470? It might also be worth it to check out the Weber Summit S-470, which has similar specifications; the two only differ in their overall look, design and material construction.
Even though there are manufacturers and grills that were not included among our top picks, there are some that still deserve an honourable mention. These go to Char-Broil Burner Gas Grills, Huntington Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Thermos Burner Gas Grill and Fiesta Propane Grill, all strong contenders, but not our top grill-master picks.
Quick Look on Gas Grill
Grilling isn’t just a way to cook summertime meals, but an American pastime as classic as baseball and apple pie and a favorite family bonding activity. Grilling has traditionally been associated with the use of charcoals to provide heat for cooking, but ever since the 1960s when gas grills were first invented, the use of charcoal has steadily been in decline. Gas grills are becoming increasingly more popular, with about 68 percent of American grill owners now preferring to use gas over charcoal. As of 2011 there were 2.4 million more gas grills being shipped than charcoal grills in the U.S., according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association.
What made us true believers in these grills is the convenience of use and the massive amount of time that they save us, that we can spend enjoying good company and conversation while grilling out. Grilling with charcoal requires a lot of time and attention, hours even, for the same result achieved on a faster heating gas grill. Some argue that charcoal grills offer other features that gas grills just can’t emultate, but we’ll save that debate for another article. Right now, the main point is that gas grills are a huge timesaver and have made the process of cooking outside incredibly efficient and easy. Gas grills also have the cost-saving option of buying propane or natural gas that can last longer than regularly buying charcoal and is easy t find in just about any grocery store.
Now that we have a good overview on the overall benefits from using gas grills, we can move on to finding the perfect gas grill for you and the things you should keep in mind before investing your money in any of these grills.
